Ingredients

  • 5-6 pound pork shoulder

  • 4 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 Tablespoons of your favorite rib rub

  • 12 ounces root beer

  • BBQ Sauce
  • ½ cup bottled barbeque sauce, such as Sweet Baby Ray’s

  • 14 ounces ketchup

  • ½ cup water

  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke

  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

  • ¼ cup brown sugar

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  • Rub the pork in your favorite rib rub spice mixture or whatever spices you prefer
  • Place the pork in your slow cooker, fat side up
  • Toss in the garlic
  • Pour the root beer around the pork in the slow cooker
  • Cover and cook on low for 7-8 hours or until fork tender
  • Remove from slow cooker and shred with two forks, removing as much fat as possible.
  • Empty the juice and grease from the slow cooker, reserving a cup or two of the liquid (not the grease)
  • Mix the BBQ sauce ingredients together.
  • Put the shredded pork back into the slow cooker, add 1 cup of the cooking liquid and the BBQ sauce. Mix well and if needed, add more of the cooking liquid.
  • 10. Heat on low for 45 minutes or until hot .
  • 11. Serve on buns.

Notes

  • My family prefers their pulled pork extra “saucy”, so I double the sauce recipe. Or, you can just squirt on a little bottled BBQ sauce.
