Tender, juicy pork, rubbed in spices and garlic, simmered in root beer in the slow cooker, shredded and slathered in a fantastic BBQ sauce and served on a bun.
Pulled Pork

5-6 pound pork shoulder
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 Tablespoons of your favorite rib rub
12 ounces root beer
- BBQ Sauce
½ cup bottled barbeque sauce, such as Sweet Baby Ray’s
14 ounces ketchup
½ cup water
1 teaspoon liquid smoke
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
¼ cup brown sugar
Salt and pepper to taste
Directions
- Rub the pork in your favorite rib rub spice mixture or whatever spices you prefer
- Place the pork in your slow cooker, fat side up
- Toss in the garlic
- Pour the root beer around the pork in the slow cooker
- Cover and cook on low for 7-8 hours or until fork tender
- Remove from slow cooker and shred with two forks, removing as much fat as possible.
- Empty the juice and grease from the slow cooker, reserving a cup or two of the liquid (not the grease)
- Mix the BBQ sauce ingredients together.
- Put the shredded pork back into the slow cooker, add 1 cup of the cooking liquid and the BBQ sauce. Mix well and if needed, add more of the cooking liquid.
- 10. Heat on low for 45 minutes or until hot .
- 11. Serve on buns.
Notes
- My family prefers their pulled pork extra “saucy”, so I double the sauce recipe. Or, you can just squirt on a little bottled BBQ sauce.
