Devil’s Food Cake

My Mom made the BEST chocolate cake on this earth. It saddened me that the recipe was not written down. I recently learned that my cousin Bernadette had a copy. Much to my surprise, I discovered that the recipe wasn’t my Mom’s, but it was my Aunt Anne’s recipe. I hope your family enjoys it as much as we all did.

Devil’s Food Cake

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar

  • 1 stick room temperature butter (Mom used Imperial margarine)

  • 2 eggs

  • 2 cups sour milk (add 1/4 teaspoon vinegar or lemon juice to the milk to sour it)

  • 2 teaspoons baking soda

  • 2 1/2 cups flour

  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla

  • Dash of salt

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Grease and flour a 13×9″ pan
  • In a small bowl,whisk together the flour, baking soda and salt
  • Cream the sugar and butter together until light and fluffy.
  • Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition
  • Add 1/2 of the flour, alternately with 1/2 of the sour milk and mix well.
  • Add the remaining flour, again alternating with the milk.
  • Add the cocoa powder, mixing well.
  • Add the vanilla and mix well.
  • 10. Pour the batter into the prepared pan
  • 11. Bake for 35 minutes or until the center of the cake springs back when you touch it.
  • 12. Cool cake and then frost with your favorite chocolate frosting.
