These incredible loose ground beef sandwiches are cheesy and delicious! Special thanks to my old friend Maureen Frost who shared this recipe with me years ago. She would make these on Halloween for her grandchildren to enjoy before “hitting the road” for Trick or Treating. Although Maureen has passed on, I’m certain her children and grandchildren cherish those memories and still enjoy this recipe today!
It’s not really a burger…
Mother’s hamburgers are a loose meat sandwich as opposed to a meat patty like a traditional hamburger. These tasty burgers won’t dry out like a traditional burger and can be made with inexpensive buns since they’re baked in the oven with a load of cheesy goodness! You might consider this a distant cousin of the Sloppy Joe, if Joe’s other side of the family loved cheese!
Brown that meat!
If you use a non-stick pan for most meals, you may find your ground beef doesn’t brown so easily (or at all!), and while that’s okay for this meal, those crispy browned bits of ground beef go hand-in-hand with melted American cheese that exists throughout the meat mixture. To break down that ground beef really well, I know some people recommend a ground meat tool, but I just use a wooden spatula and a high-quality stainless steel pan.
For the picky eaters…
This recipe does use traditional yellow mustard and while my kids never had an issue with that, your mileage may vary. I’ve substituted the mustard out for barbecue (and the Swiss for cheddar) and it was a big hit with picky eaters who didn’t want those items. Still, I stand by the tried and true recipe as the best overall. The American cheese melts down perfectly into the meat mixture to hold everything together while the Swiss cheese chunks turn to gooey pockets of happiness. If you’ve got modifications you’ve made to the recipe, I’d love to hear about them in the comments!
