Soft Pretzels

Nothing’s better than a hot, salty bread type pretzel, hot out of the oven. The best part of all is you don’t have to pay 2, 3, 4 or 5 dollars each. You can bake them yourself and sprinkle on as little or as much as you like!

Soft Pretzels

Ingredients

  • 1¼ cup warm (85 degree) water

  • 1 package dry yeast

  • ½ teaspoon sugar

  • 4½ cups flour

  • Kosher salt

  • Vegetable shortening (to grease bowl and cookie sheet)

  • 1 egg yolk, diluted with ½ Tablespoon water

Directions

  • Combine water, yeast and sugar and let stand for 1 hour.
  • Add the flour to the yeast mixture.
  • Knead 7 to 8 minutes.
  • Let rise, covered, in greased bowl until doubled in bulk.
  • Punch down and break off hunks of dough, roll into a rope about 8 inches long and shape into a pretzel shape.
  • Place on greased cookie sheet.
  • Brush with egg yolk/water mixture.
  • Sprinkle with coarse Kosher salt.
  • Let rise until not quite doubled in size.
  • 10.Bake in a preheated 475 degree oven for 10 minutes.
  • Serve with your favorite mustard or ranch dressing.
