Baking Powder Biscuits

These light and fluffy biscuits are quick and easy to make and are very tasty. We love to have them in the morning, covered with sausage gravy or at dinnertime with stew or a nice bowl of soup.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour

  • 1 Tablespoon baking powder

  • 1 Tablespoon sugar

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 6 Tablespoons cold butter

  • ¾ cup whole milk

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees
  • Place the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt in a bowl and whisk to combine.
  • Cut the butter into small pieces and add to the flour mixture.
  • With a pastry cutter, work in the butter until the mixture resembles small crumbs.
  • Add the milk and stir with a fork just until combined.
  • Turn out onto a lightly floured board and knead 4 to 5 times…just until the dough clumps together.
  • Pat the dough into a disc about 1 inch thick.
  • Using a biscuit cutter or a glass (about 2 ¼ inches round), cut the biscuits and place on a buttered cookie sheet, about 2 inches apart.
  • Bake for 12 minutes or until lightly browned.

Notes

  • Makes 6-8 biscuits
  • Don’t over work the dough. Over kneading makes for tough biscuits.
